Gio Reyna has been a regular for the U.S. national team under Mauricio Pochettino since returning to the national team fold in late 2025, but it has not been as smooth sailing for the 23-year-old American at the club level.

After struggling for multiple seasons in Germany, first with Borussia Dortmund and then for a year at Borussia Monchengladbach, Reyna has found it difficult to break into either squad and earn a regular starting role.

So this season, Reyna dumped the Bundesliga and moved to France, where he joined BlueCo club Strasbourg hoping to turn his club career around.

Early signs are promising, as Reyna has slotted into a starting role with the club immediately under Portuguese manager Hugo Oliveria.

Gio Reyna goal vs. PSG

In the 14th minute of the Ligue 1 meeting between PSG and Strasbourg on Saturday at Stade de la Meinau, Gio Reyna gave the hosts an early lead as he snuck the ball in at the near post by Matvey Safanov.

The move was largely down to Reyna who created the moment for himself, first playing a give-and-go with right-winger Gessime Yassine before charging into the penalty area on the ball and picking out the inside of the near post.

The moment was a shock, as PSG were expected to walk the match against their opponents in the bottom half of the Ligue 1 table.

Reyna was everywhere for Strasbourg throughout the match, which represented his first 90-minute performance of the season. He saw 43 touches all over the pitch, with two early shots plus a chance created and a 27-for-32 passing effort.

Ultimately, Strasbourg would lose the match 3-1 to the Ligue 1 leaders, who scored three goals in the final 13 minutes of the game. Ilya Zabarnyi found the equalizer in the 77th minute, while substitutes Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue came off the bench to secure the victory.

Gio Reyna stats, goals for Strasbourg

The goal was Gio Reyna’s second of the season for Strasbourg, as he looks to carve out a regular role in France.

He has appeared in all seven of Strasbourg’s league matches so far this season, with five of those starts, already more starts than he had all of last season in the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach.

His first goal for the club came in a 6-2 win over Troyes, scoring his team’s third in the 57th minute.

Reyna has racked up 47 caps for the U.S. national team, scoring 10 goals in his international career.
