The Carolina Panthers are back under the Sunday night lights for the first time in a decade, and they’ll need to be sharper than they were last week to hang with the Detroit Lions.

The Lions (2-1) are 3.5-point road favorites at FanDuel for Sunday’s 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff at Bank of America Stadium, with the total sitting at 50.5. Detroit is coming off a 31-24 win over the Jets, while Carolina (1-2) let a fourth-quarter lead slip away in a 21-18 loss to Cleveland.

That total is one of the highest on the Week 4 board, and it’s easy to see why. The Lions have scored at least 24 points in every game this season, but their defense hasn’t been able to slow anybody down either. Every one of Detroit’s games so far has gone over.

That said, the Panthers aren’t a lock to roll over at home. Bryce Young has been slinging it early in the season, and if Carolina can keep this one a shootout, the hook on 3.5 starts to look awfully interesting.

Panthers vs. Lions prediction

The weather could flip the script on what looks like a shootout on paper.

Rain is expected in Charlotte on Sunday, with heavy storms possible during the game. Temperatures should dip into the low-to-mid 60s by kickoff, and while the wind looks light, a wet ball and a sloppy field are enough to slow down two offenses that have been rolling.

For Bryce Young and the Panthers, this could be the most important factor. When he’s had a clean pocket, he’s been one of the best quarterbacks in football, and nobody in the league is pushing the ball downfield more. But those deep shots to Tetairoa McMillan get a lot tougher with a slick ball, and Carolina’s offensive line has allowed more pressure than any team in the NFL. Aidan Hutchinson and a Detroit pass rush that gets home about 40% of the time could make this a long night for Young.

The rain should push both teams toward the ground game, and Detroit has the edge there. Jahmyr Gibbs and the Lions have been staying ahead of the chains on the ground better than almost anyone, while Carolina’s run defense has been one of the shakier units in the league. Expect Detroit to lean on Gibbs and grind out drives.

That said, the conditions help Carolina keep this close. The Panthers’ secondary has been one of the best coverage units in football, and if Jared Goff has to work in the rain, it’ll be tough to find the explosive plays that have fueled Detroit’s offense. A shorter game with fewer possessions also gives the home underdog a better shot at hanging around.

Detroit does have one weather-proof weapon in Jake Bates. If drives stall in the red zone, the Lions have a kicker who can still convert from distance in rough conditions, and that could be the difference in a close one.

Prediction: Lions 20, Panthers 17

Panthers vs. Lions best bets

This total has climbed four points since it opened at 47.5, and nearly all of the betting action is on the Over. I’m happy to go the other way, especially with the forecast getting worse by the day.

Charlotte is looking at periods of rain and thunderstorms on Sunday, with several hours of steady rain expected and even some flash flooding risk. That’s not the setup you want for an Over this high.

Bryce Young has been airing it out, but he completed just 54% of his passes in last week’s loss to Cleveland when the Browns lived in the backfield. Put a wet ball in his hands against a Lions front that can get home, and those drives will stall. On the other side, Detroit should lean heavily on the run in these conditions, which keeps the clock moving and cuts down on possessions.

The Lions should win this game, but getting more than a field goal with the home team in a sloppy, low-scoring game is too good to pass up.

A three-point Detroit win, which is very much in play in these conditions, cashes this ticket. And the Panthers have shown they can hang around. They led Cleveland in the fourth quarter last week before letting it get away in a three-point loss.

Detroit’s pass defense has also been the worst in the league, giving up just under 300 passing yards per game. Even in the rain, Young should find a few chunk plays to keep Carolina within striking distance.

There is a real concern here. The Panthers will be without starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson, which thins out their secondary against Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jared Goff. Still, the weather should limit how much Detroit can take advantage of that through the air.

If the weather holds, Gibbs is the Detroit player I want to back.

Carolina has been getting worked on the ground, ranking near the bottom of the NFL in several rushing metrics through three weeks. That becomes a major problem against a Lions offense that has no issue leaning on Gibbs when the matchup calls for it.

He also fits how I expect Detroit to approach this game. Rain and a wet football should push the Lions away from asking Jared Goff to throw it 35-plus times, especially if they are playing from ahead. Detroit can instead lean on its offensive line, shorten the game, and continuously put Gibbs in favorable situations.

The number is high, but the volume should be there. Gibbs has the explosiveness to get there without needing 25 carries, and Carolina has already shown it can give up chunk runs.

If Detroit gets into the second half with a lead, Gibbs could absolutely push 20-plus carries and 100 yards.

Best Panthers vs. Lions SGP

Here is our favorite SGP for Sunday Night Football:

  • Jahmyr Gibbs over 135.5 rushing and receiving yards: Gibbs is averaging over 150 scrimmage yards per game, and he’s been just as dangerous catching passes as he is running. In the rain, he should be Jared Goff’s go-to checkdown on top of his heavy workload on the ground.
  • Jahmyr Gibbs 2+ touchdowns: Gibbs already has six touchdowns and has scored multiple times in two of his three games. In a low-scoring game, Detroit’s points are likely coming from him, especially near the goal line.
  • Jameson Williams under 50.5 receiving yards: Williams hasn’t reached 50 yards in any game this season, with Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown soaking up most of the targets. He makes his money on deep shots, and those are the first throws to go when the ball is wet.
  • Odds (+340 on FanDuel)
