The Tennessee Titans are 0-3 on the regular season, and look to be headed towards another year near the bottom of the NFL standings.

Cam Ward and the offense don’t look great so far, and the defense hasn’t shown enough promise yet either. The Titans are looking likely to be trade deadline sellers this season, with a few names sticking out as potential trade targets.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, there are two reasons why running back Tony Pollard is an obvious trade candidate this season. One of those reasons involves the team’s record and trajectory, the other being his $21 million contract.

Two reasons why Tony Pollard is an obvious trade candidate for Titans

“Tony Pollard fits the profile of somebody who could be dealt before the trade deadline,” Schefter said. “A team that’s not winning, with a player in the last year of his contract… if there’s a team that needs running back help, Pollard might be the first call.”

The Titans are currently 0-3 and look likely to remain at or near the bottom of the NFL moving forward this season.

By all measures, this is a team that will be selling at the NFL trade deadline. A team with a record likely to be as poor as the Titans’ will look to sell at the deadline.

When it comes to Pollard, he’s about as obvious a trade candidate as they come. He’s 29 years old, is a veteran with ample experience, and is likely readily available this season.

He’s in the final year of a three-year, $21,750,000 contract, meaning he’ll be a free agent once this year comes to a close. Tennessee is not likely to get anything in return when he leaves in free agency, so trading him at the mid-season mark makes sense.

Tyjae Spears and Nicholas Singleton can remain as the team’s top running backs, which isn’t a horrible situation all things considered.

There will be teams interested in running back help this Fall. The Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks, and the Minnesota Vikings are a few teams to keep an eye on for now, but plenty more could emerge depending on what injuries occur over the next few weeks.

There are two obvious reasons why Pollard is a top trade candidate this season. Between this being the last year of his contract and the Titans’ poor record, Pollard is about as clear of a trade target as there can be in the NFL.
