Never before in college basketball have a pair of teams scored on the wrong basket on the same day. That was until this week. Two players evidently had trouble figuring out which way was up.

New Mexico State and Northwestern State each sank layups on the wrong end of the floor, which caused two head-scratching moments in separate games. One came with New Mexico State trailing by a point with 20 seconds to go against Southern Utah. Emma Christiano of the Aggies stole an inbounds pass and went the wrong way.

“Aggies lead!” the NMST play-by-play announcer went off after Christiano’s layup. He was confused as well.

New Mexico State’s Stacy Chovino scored the game’s final two buckets, including a layup into the correct basket with two seconds to go. The Aggies pulled out a 64-63 win.

Earlier in the day, Northwestern State was in the first quarter of its game against Arkansas. Karma Wynn took a bounce pass from a teammate under her own basket. She was wide open and scored two for the Razorbacks.

The Lady Demons were behind by six with the Hogs eventually coasting to an 89-59 win.

Needless to say, there was something in the air inside both venues.
