No. 3 Utah puts its perfect season on the line Saturday when No. 9 BYU visits Rice-Eccles Stadium for the latest chapter of the Holy War, and new users can get in on the action with ProphetX promo code TSN for a $40 prediction bonus.

This rivalry hasn’t carried stakes like this in a long time. Utah is 8-0 (5-0 Big 12) in Morgan Scalley’s first season as head coach and sits alone in first place in the conference. BYU is 7-1 (4-1) and has won the last three meetings, so the Cougars have plenty of reasons to believe they can spoil the Utes’ run. The winner takes a big step toward the Big 12 title game and a College Football Playoff spot.

Kickoff is set for noon ET on ABC, and the Utes are short home favorites. Below, we break down how to claim the ProphetX offer and the college football value plays we like for Utah vs. BYU.

College Football markets on ProphetX

ProphetX has an extensive selection of available markets for college football action. As a reminder for those used to sports betting, ProphetX displays market percentages instead of betting odds. The percentages reflect the collective implied probability of an event. Meanwhile, betting odds are set by the house to bake in a profit margin.

Here’s an outline of some markets users can predict on:

  • Game lines (moneyline, spread, total)
  • First-half props (moneyline, spread, total)
  • Player props (touchdowns, passing yards, rushing yards, receiving yards, receptions, passing touchdowns)

Utah vs. BYU value picks

Utah has looked like the best team in the Big 12 all season, and I’m not going to argue otherwise. But this line asks the Utes to beat their biggest rival by more than a field goal, and BYU has won the last three meetings.

The Cougars have also been one of the most reliable teams in the country against the spread, going 6-2 ATS this season. Their lone loss came against UCF, and they bounced back last week by holding off Arizona State 27-20. That game was tighter than BYU would’ve liked, but the defense put on a show early with six sacks before halftime. If that pass rush can rattle Devon Dampier the way it rattled the Sun Devils, the Cougars can keep this one close the whole way.

Bear Bachmeier gives BYU a quarterback who’s already been through a big-game atmosphere this year. He accounted for four touchdowns in the win over Notre Dame, and he’s at his best when he can extend plays with his legs. Utah’s offense gets most of the attention, but the Utes weren’t untouchable in the two games before Cincinnati, with a 27-24 escape at Colorado and a 21-13 win over Houston.

There’s also a chance BYU gets LJ Martin back from injury for this one. His return would give the Cougars a physical runner to pair with Bachmeier, and it would make life a lot easier for this offense in a hostile road environment. Rivalry games tend to get tight, and I’ll take the points with the team that’s owned this series lately.

The total feels a little low for two offenses that can hit big plays. Utah put up 49 at Cincinnati last week, and Dampier threw for 260 yards on 22-of-29 passing. Wayshawn Parker also ripped off 82 rushing yards on just seven carries, and the Utes’ ground game should have room to work against a BYU front that’s been just average stopping the run by EPA.

Utah’s defense has a habit of putting points on the board, too. Rabbit Evans returned a fumble 51 yards for a touchdown against the Bearcats, and the Utes added a pick-six in the same half. Non-offensive scores are a total’s best friend, and this defense has shown it can produce them.

The over has also hit in five of eight games for each team this season. The noon kickoff might keep things sleepy early, but I expect both offenses to settle in once the nerves wear off. With Dampier and Bachmeier both capable of moving the chains with their legs, I like this one to land somewhere in the 50s.

Utah vs. BYU best player props

BYU entered this season needing new targets for Bear Bachmeier after losing Parker Kingston, Chase Roberts, and Carsen Ryan, and Walker Lyons has grown into one of his most trusted options. The USC transfer strung together back-to-back five-catch games in October, and at 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, he’s a tough matchup for linebackers and safeties over the middle.

The game script should send plenty of volume his way. Utah has one of the best run defenses in the country, so BYU will likely have to move the ball through the air more than it wants to. Bachmeier threw for 236 yards against Arizona State last week, and quick throws to the tight end are the easiest way to keep a strong Utes pass rush honest.

Lyons doesn’t need a big play to get there, either. Two or three catches on short and intermediate routes should put him past 30 yards, and that’s a pretty reasonable ask for a tight end who’s become a steady part of the passing game.

Bear Bachmeier tried to leap over a pile of linemen at the goal line against Arizona State last week. He got stuffed on that one, but the play said plenty about how BYU wants to finish drives right now. When the Cougars get close, the ball is going to their quarterback.

That shift started when LJ Martin went down against TCU. Bachmeier had only 12 carries through BYU’s first three games, then ran 15 times for 66 yards and two scores in that win over the Horned Frogs. With Martin’s status still up in the air, there’s no reason to expect the Cougars to pull back on Bachmeier’s role now.

He’s also done this before. Bachmeier ran for nine touchdowns as a freshman last season, and he’s at his best when a defense loses track of him on designed runs and scrambles. Utah will be focused on keeping him in the pocket, but in a game this tight, he only needs one red-zone trip where the Utes overcommit to the running back or the edge.

This is close to a coin-flip price for a quarterback who doubles as BYU’s top goal-line option. I’m happy to back him to find the end zone in the biggest game of his season.
