Don’t look now, but the NFL’s trade deadline is creeping up on Nov. 10, so we’re just days away from the final call for teams to trade and make big deals. When the trade deadline passes, player contracts will no longer be assigned or traded from one team to the next. The official cutoff is 4 p.m. ET on Nov. 10.

In a piece out Thursday via ESPN, Bill Barnwell lays out trade ideas that seem possible before the trade deadline comes and goes.

The Detroit Lions are in the mix. They just lost a crucial part of their defense in linebacker Jack Campbell, who’s sadly recovering from a very bad injury. But Barnwell sees this team looking to help another position instead.

Detroit Lions could get back an old friend before the NFL trade deadline

The Lions could boost their defense before the trade deadline. General manager Brad Holmes isn’t known for making expensive deals, so one option that’s interesting to consider is a bargain trade.

Barnwell’s bargain deal is to snag cornerback Mike Hughes, who “was with a very different version of this Lions team in 2022 before leaving for the Falcons in free agency.” So, it’s a familiar face.

“He has started most of his time there, but after A.J. Terrell Jr. returned from injured reserve, Hughes has been in a reserve role, including a season-low eight defensive snaps during last week’s loss to the Buccaneers,” Barnwell adds. “He wouldn’t be an obvious upgrade on any of the options in Detroit, but the 29-year-old has been a reliable low-end starter at corner for most of his time in Atlanta.”

This is a deal that wouldn’t break the bank. That’s exactly why it may be attractive to Holmes and the Lions.
