With Florida State now having a job opening after moving on from head coach Mike Norvell, one of the first names brought up is Colorado head coach Deion Sanders.
Sanders, arguably the greatest player in Florida State history, seems like a strong candidate from the outside. However, it’s also fair to say Sanders isn’t loved by everyone, and his below-average tenure at Colorado has only made that worse.
Colorado has been one of the worst teams in college football over the past couple of years, finishing 3-9 a season ago and now sitting at 3-5.
The Buffaloes also went 1-8 in the Big 12 last season and are currently 1-4.
Simply put, there’s a lot that Colorado has to figure out, and if Florida State wants to turn this thing around right away, Sanders hasn’t proven that he can accomplish that.
According to the latest report, there are some other factors at play here, though I question whether those are fair.
“While there is an appetite for someone who is an ‘FSU guy,’ it has been relayed from the top down that some of the baggage that comes with Deion is not desired as they commence this rebuild,” Noles247 insider Kolby Crawford told CBS Sports on Monday.
I have to question this because Coach Prime has always been like this. This isn’t somebody who has just changed his ways over the past couple of years. All Florida State fans loved him when he was with the program because of what he was able to do and the attitude he had on and off the field.
Sanders has never been a bad guy by any means, but he’s always believed he’s the best on the field, and when he was a player, that was accurate 99.9% of the time.
I feel like he made a name for himself at Florida State because of a different kind of attitude that others don’t have, so saying fans wouldn’t like that doesn’t feel fair to me.
Whether there are other reasons they don’t want him is one thing, but this one seems off.
