The Green Bay Packers are in as good a position as any team in the NFL to improve at this year’s NFL trade deadline, with the hope that they’ll do just that, with Jordan Love showing that he’s only going to improve, the defense expected to get better with Micah Parsons returning in the near future, and simply getting healthier all around.
The Packers have reportedly been interested in adding another wide receiver, as crazy as that might sound.
With the Josh Jacobs situation seemingly being shut down for now, Green Bay could be in a position where it makes sense to add elsewhere. However, reports have also indicated that the team is interested in a guy like Jonathan Taylor.
For that to happen, Green Bay likely has to move on from Jacobs, with the latest report suggesting that it’s a little bit more difficult than some believe.
“Josh Jacobs was never suspended. As such he currently qualifies for 100% termination pay – Meaning if released and he doesn’t sign with another team the Packers will still owe and cap 100% of his $10.2m base salary. Only savings would be from not having to pay $41,176/game active the rest of the season.
“The Packers could release Jacobs for conduct detrimental to the team – but an arbitrator would have to conclude his conduct was so severe it would warrant more than a 4 game suspension for the Packers to not be on the hook for termination pay. A bit of a financial gamble. Packers certainly would have to hedge elsewhere, likely in a Jordan Love restructure and/or a Jonathan Taylor restructure after the trade to cover the $5.67m in remaining base salary cost if the arbitration doesn’t go their way,” Ken Ingalls wrote.
A lot of this will come down to money at the end of the day, though it’s also fair to mention that the Packers are in a position where they might feel they have to win in the immediate future with this current core.
The Packers have a lot of young talent, but it’s fair to say this team will only get so many more chances to show it can win a Super Bowl. Adding a guy like Jonathan Taylor would help that, even if it means moving on from Jacobs.
