Notre Dame is favored at home in a massive matchup with Miami, but the Hurricanes have the advantage when it comes to star power — at least, as long as Malachi Toney can play.
Toney is dealing with an injury ahead of Saturday’s clash with the Fighting Irish, threatening both Miami’s chances of going into South Bend as healthy as possible offensively and the sophomore receiver’s chance to make his case to Heisman Trophy voters.
Toney has seven touchdowns in his last three games and has already hit the 1,000-yard mark through just eight games.
Here’s what you need to know about Toney’s injury and his status for Saturday.

Malachi Toney injury update
Toney’s status for Saturday’s game is “uncertain” due to an ankle injury, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports. Despite the concerning news, Thamel says Toney is “expected to press and attempt to play.”
NEWS: Miami star Malachi Toney is dealing with an injured ankle and his status for Saturday’s game against Notre Dame is uncertain, sources tell me and @max_olson. Toney is expected to press and attempt to play, given the magnitude of the game. https://t.co/Uo38qFaLM8

The injury occurred during practice on Wednesday, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who echoes Thamel’s reporting that Toney is already “pushing to play” against Notre Dame.
The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson reported Toney’s injury is “not serious,” adding that one Miami coach is hopeful the star receiver will be back on the practice field Thursday.
I was giving UM more time to respond to my tip earlier, but they decided not to, which I understand. Someone at UM practice said earlier today that Toney was “banged up” with the ankle injury but it’s not serious. A UM coach has told friends that he’s hopeful Malachi will be back tomorrow and play Saturday. Injury is not serious/longterm.

Toney is the heart of Miami’s offense outside of QB Darian Mensah, as he is averaging 128.4 yards per game and has 13 touchdowns in just eight games after a stellar true freshman season.
If Toney is forced to sit out, his momentum in what many view as a three-man Heisman race with Mensah and Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith would be halted.
