LSU heads to Kroger Field on Saturday night for an SEC matchup between two 4-1 teams, and oddsmakers don’t expect it to be close. The Tigers are 10-point road favorites over Kentucky, with a 7 p.m. ET kickoff in Lexington.

Kentucky enters on a high after one of the season’s wildest finishes. The Wildcats fell behind South Carolina 14-0 in the first quarter, clawed back to force overtime, and won 35-34. It was a gutsy win, but it also exposed problems that could come back to bite them. Kentucky has been one of the worst teams in the country at moving the chains on third down, and that’s a scary trend heading into a game against an LSU defense that thrives on getting to the quarterback.

LSU has been rolling behind quarterback Sam Leavitt, who keeps finding the end zone through the air and on the ground. There have been occasional interceptions, but the Tigers’ offense has generally been too much for opponents to match. Kentucky’s only loss came against Alabama, which is the closest comparison to what they’ll see Saturday.

Kentucky vs. LSU prediction

Kentucky deserve credit for the way they’ve started, but this is a big step up in class. The Wildcats needed overtime to get past South Carolina at home, and the one time they faced a team on LSU’s level, Alabama handled them. LSU is a different animal, and they’ve been beating opponents by much wider margins this season than they did a year ago.

Kentucky’s biggest problem is up front on defense. The Wildcats have struggled to stop the run, and LSU has the balance to lean on that weakness all night. If the Tigers get their ground game going early, Leavitt will have easy play-action looks, and Kentucky’s secondary will be stuck in a bad spot.

Kroger Field can get loud on a Saturday night, and the Wildcats have shown they won’t quit when they fall behind. That said, coming back from two touchdowns down against South Carolina is one thing. Doing it against this LSU defense is another. I think the Tigers control this one from the second quarter on and pull away late.

Prediction: LSU 34, Kentucky 17

Kentucky vs. LSU best bets

Anderson has been a secondary option in Kentucky’s passing attack, recording nine receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown through five games. He’s averaging 13.3 yards per reception, meaning he doesn’t need significant volume to clear this number. With Kentucky entering as an 8.5-point underdog, the Wildcats will likely have to throw more often. Anderson has already produced a 32-yard reception this season, giving him the ability to approach this total on one play.

LSU’s defense has been excellent, allowing just 15.2 points per game through five contests. Kentucky is averaging 34.6 points, but the Wildcats face a significant step up in competition against an LSU defense that has consistently limited opposing offenses. Kentucky’s offensive efficiency is also concerning, particularly its ability to sustain drives. I expect LSU to control the game with its rushing attack, limit Kentucky’s possessions, and keep the total low.

LSU has the personnel advantage on both sides of the ball, and the Tigers’ defense could be the difference. They’re allowing just 15.2 points per game, while Kentucky is surrendering 26.8. LSU’s offense is averaging 43.6 points per contest and should find opportunities against a Kentucky secondary dealing with injuries. The Wildcats have been competitive this season, but LSU’s ability to generate explosive plays while limiting Kentucky’s offensive efficiency gives the Tigers a legitimate chance to win by double digits.

Best SGP for Kentucky vs. LSU

Here is our favorite same game parlay for this SEC matchup:

  • LSU -8.5: LSU has been blowing teams out this season, and Kentucky’s struggles to stop the run make it tough to see them keeping this within one score. Getting a point better than the market number makes the Tigers even easier to back.
  • LSU 425+ total yards: The Tigers have piled up yards through the air and on the ground, and Kentucky’s defense hasn’t shown it can slow down an offense with this much balance. Leavitt should have plenty of room to work once LSU establishes the run.
  • Kentucky under 118.5 rushing yards: The Wildcats managed just 113 rushing yards against South Carolina, and LSU’s front is a much tougher test. If Kentucky fall behind early, they’ll be forced to throw, which should keep their rushing total in check
  • Odds (+284 at FanDuel)
