For decades, Welsh football fans lived off scraps of hope. Aside from that legendary charge to the 1958 World Cup quarter-finals, where they were edged out by a Brazil side powered by a teenage Pele, and a spirited Euro ’76 run halted by Yugoslavia, Wales spent years stumbling just short of major tournaments.

Campaign after campaign ended in heartbreak, with near-misses and “what could have been” moments becoming something of a national tradition.

But the tide has turned. Under Craig Bellamy’s leadership, the men’s side have built on their modern Euros resurgence, reaching Euro 2020 and then breaking a 64-year drought by qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, only the second time Wales have ever reached the biggest stage in football.

Now, after a strong performance in Group J of the 2025 World Cup qualifiers, Wales have renewed belief. Bellamy and his squad will be pushing hard to punch their ticket to another finals and continue rewriting the nation’s footballing story.

Have Wales qualified for World Cup 2026?

Wales hammered North Macedonia 7-1 in Cardiff to clinch second place in Group J, finishing just behind Belgium in their push for a spot at the 2026 World Cup.

Craig Bellamy’s side already had a playoff ticket in their back pocket thanks to their Nations League triumph, but locking down the runners-up spot brings a massive advantage. By sealing second place, Wales earned themselves a home semifinal in March, a huge lift for both Bellamy and the Red Wall.

The result also drops Wales into pot two for the upcoming playoff draw. When the names are pulled on Thursday, they’ll be guaranteed a Cardiff showdown against one of the third-seeded sides: Republic of Ireland, Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia.

If Wales clear their semi-final hurdle, a heavyweight could be waiting in the play-off decider. The top-seeded pot features some serious firepower, with Italy, Denmark, Turkey and Ukraine all potential opponents in a high-stakes final.

When will Wales know their playoff opponents?

The playoff draw takes place on Thursday in Zurich, and it promises to map out Wales’ entire route to the World Cup.

Not only will Bellamy’s squad discover their semi-final opponents, they’ll also learn which pot one or pot four nation could be waiting in a potential final, with UEFA laying out the full pathway for all four remaining qualification spots.

Thursday will also settle another crucial detail. Wales will find out whether a possible final would be played in Cardiff or on the road, no matter who they end up facing.

Wales World Cup schedule

Wales now find themselves just two victories away from booking a ticket to the World Cup, and all that’s left is to discover who they’ll have to knock off to get there.

Thursday’s play-off draw will lay out the path, revealing the opponents standing between the Dragons and a back-to-back appearance on football’s grandest stage.

If Craig Bellamy’s side pull it off, they’ll still have to wait a little longer to see what lies ahead. Their full World Cup schedule won’t be revealed until the official 2026 draw, when all 12 groups are set and the road to the final finally comes into focus.

When is the World Cup draw?

The draw for the 2026 World Cup takes place in Washington, D.C. on Friday, December 5.

The ceremony is due to start at 12 p.m. local time (ET).
