  • Wheatley addresses Marko replacement claims as Vettel branded “seriously impressive person”

Jonathan Wheatley has addressed the rumours that four-time Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel might replace Dr. Helmut Marko as Red Bull motorsport advisor when the latter retires. Although the former Red Bull sporting director believes that Vettel is a “seriously impressive person,” he wants to see Marko continue in the role for years to come.

The 82-year-old has been in the role since 2005 and has overseen the development of many successful Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls drivers over the years, including Vettel and fellow champion Max Verstappen.

Vettel confirmed earlier this week that he was in contact with Marko about the subject of following in his footsteps.

“There have been a few headlines recently. I still get along great with Helmut, and we’re in contact regarding the topic,” the former Red Bull driver explained to ORF TV’s Sport am Sonntag podcast. “[Talks are] not yet that intensive or in-depth. It’s perhaps something that could play a role. In what form remains to be seen.”

Wheatley, who has obviously worked closely with both Marko and Vettel addressed the latter’s comments during the team press conference ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix.

“Well, I think first of all, trying to replace Helmut is quite a challenge in itself. I can’t quite imagine how any one individual could do that. Look, I haven’t seen Sebastian for a while, he’s a seriously impressive person as you all know, I believe the conversations have been confirmed between the two parties but whether that comes to anything I don’t know. But, I’m hoping I see Helmut in that role for a much longer period of time.”

Vettel echoed Wheatley’s comments, claiming Marko is “irreplaceable.”

“His character alone,” he continued during his podcast appearance. “And he’s made a very, very significant contribution to what the entire team has achieved over the years since 2005. And perhaps it wouldn’t even be the goal to have someone replace him.

“He’s said a few times that he’s going to quit, but he’s still here. I hope he stays with us for a long time. But of course, at some point, things will inevitably move on, and he knows that. He’s a brutal realist and can assess things quite well. He’ll sense when the time is right.

“I have to admit, though, that I haven’t been that close in recent years. But I do think I know what he’s doing. And no matter what happens, there’s still a lot to learn from him.”
