Inter Miami are currently fifth in the Major League Soccer table with 42 points in 22 games.

While the Herons have three league matches at hand to move up the ranks, there are certain reported uncertainties surrounding some players in the squad, including Lionel Messi.

Messi’s current contract at Inter Miami is set to expire at the end of December this year, and the Argentine icon is yet to trigger the option in his deal to extend further.

Now, doubts have reportedly surfaced about the future of another of Inter Miami’s squad, Sergio Busquets.

Busquets joined the Herons from Barcelona in 2023, and similar to Messi’s, the Spanish midfielder’s contract with Inter Miami also expires at the end of this year.

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano has shared his thoughts on Busquets’ situation with the MLS side.

What did Javier Mascherano say about Inter Miami’s Sergio Busquets?

During a press conference on Tuesday, Mascherano heaped praise on Busquets while speaking about the 37-year-old’s role in his squad, and said,

“He’s an incredibly important player, not just in the history of football, but also in the history of this club. Sergio is a personal favorite of mine. Imagine, I went to Barcelona just to learn from him. I went there to be his backup so I could watch him up close, so imagine how life works out that now I get to coach him,” as per World Soccer Talk.

When asked by reporters to shed light on Busquets’ future at Inter Miami, Mascherano replied,

“When it comes to the veteran players, now including Rodrigo (De Paul), these are matters more related to the club and its long-term project. They usually sit down face-to-face with the owners, and the decisions are made between them. I’ve truly enjoyed these seven months with Sergio. Hopefully he can keep playing, and if it’s with Inter Miami, even better.”

“In my opinion, he still has a lot to offer. But when it comes to those conversations between him and the club, I’m not directly involved, and I don’t have a lot of information about that.”

Busquets has been a regular starter for Inter Miami since his arrival, making a total of 94 appearances during which he has registered one goal and 13 assists.
