The Pittsburgh Steelers are hoping Will Howard can be the future at quarterback once Aaron Rodgers hangs up his cleats, something he’s expected to do after this season.
In the meantime, Howard is learning from the future Hall of Fame quarterback, who thinks the Ohio State product has “a great chance to be a long-term guy” in the NFL, which amounts to a head-turning endorsement.
“I just like his approach. You know, he’s a good kid. He cares about it, he works hard, he listens. He’s a good note taker. He’s been picking my brain. I told him last night; he was in the room where he was talking about signals. I said, ‘What can I do for you?’ I want to be a support system for him and pass on anything I can,” Rodgers said of Howard.
“I don’t want to overstep my bounds. If he wants to learn anything or pick my brain and be in my pocket, I’m all for it,” he added. “So, I’m looking forward to growing that friendship. But he has all the ability and the talent, and when his time comes, I think he’s going to have a great chance to be a long-term guy in the league.”
The Steelers are just a few practices into training camp and Howard has already climbed up the depth chart.
According to Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, it looks like Howard has already surpassed Skylar Thompson on the depth chart for the QB3 role.
“Day 2 of Steelers camp and it appears Will Howard has passed Skylar Thompson on the depth chart to be QB3. He’s getting the third string reps in 7 shots to begin the day,” Batko reported.
Along with showing progress overall, one of Howard’s goals for training camp was to move into the QB3 spot on the depth chart behind Rodgers and Mason Rudolph.
It didn’t take long for him to do that.
