ELLAND ROAD, LEEDS — Leeds United welcome Manchester United for what is sure to be a high-octane Premier League encounter for under-fire manager Michael Carrick.

United were beaten 2-0 by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in midweek, extending their overall season record to two wins in eight matches.

Lisandro Martinez’s inflammatory post-match comments did not dissuade perceptions of a mounting crisis.

Leeds are three points better off than their visitors in ninth and eyeing the upper echelons of the table, meaning Elland Road will be fired up for a match against a team widely loathed in these parts.

Prematch

8:20 p.m. – We’ve gone with a fairly conventional take on that United line-up. Amad came on for Rashford and played on the left wing in midweek, so let’s assume he’s playing there. However, it’s entirely possible he’ll play as a wing-back alongside Dalot and United match up to Leeds’ shape with a back three. Alternatively, Carrick was on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s staff when United had some success playing a midfield diamond with “split strikers”. That would mean Mbeumo and Amad pulling into the channels and creating space for Fernandes to cause havoc, which sounds decent in theory.

Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo

7:55 p.m. – For Leeds, Daniel Farke goes with the same XI that ran Arsenal so close last weekend. It adds to the sense of one team being in form and absolutely knowing their roles and another scrambling once again as fall turns to winter.

7:45 a.m. – Let’s have a look at the team news. First Manchester United. Lisandro Martinez is off the naughty step and remains in the starting XI. Although it looks like he’s been shunted over to left-back. Is that a sort of footballing naughty step? Anyway, Carlos Baleba gets a first Premier League start in a midfield that will have to be more robust than it’s been previously this season. Amad Diallo replaces Marcus Rashford in attack. United have missed the Ivory Coast winger’s industry and trickery.

7:30 a.m. – Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Leeds United vs. Manchester United live from Elland Road. Michael Carrick’s team are badly in need of a win and will walk into a bearpit at this old ground this afternoon.
