The New York Knicks have been involved in contract extension discussions with Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart. However, Towns has been much more public about how he feels the negotiations are going.
The center helped the Knicks win an NBA championship last summer, marking a major accomplishment for both Towns and the organization. However, it now appears that contract talks with both players have come to a halt for the time being.
“As an organization, our entire focus is on preparing for the upcoming season and delivering another year for our fans to be proud of. As a result, we will not be negotiating contract extensions until later in the season and will remain solely focused on preparing for the start of the season,” a Knicks spokesperson told ESPN.
The latest contract update on Towns revealed a significant gap between the Knicks’ offer and the maximum amount he could earn. Towns could receive $277 million, while New York has offered the six-time All-Star $200 million.
“The Knicks have offered KAT around $200 million, league sources confirmed to The Post, which is $77 million less than his max,” New York Post’s Stefan Bondy wrote.
That is a sizable gap between the two sides, and one that could make negotiations difficult. Before the Knicks announced that extension talks were on hold, NBA insider Chris Haynes also revealed that the difference between the two sides remained significant.
“New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns willing to take less than a max deal, but a sizable gap remains,” Haynes said.
This is not an ideal situation for either side, but the Knicks must be careful not to overspend on one player at the expense of the rest of the roster. Committing too much money to a star can limit a team’s financial flexibility when it comes time to pay other players.
Still, Towns has expressed a desire to remain in New York, leaving the door open for a potential agreement if both sides can find common ground. For now, it remains unclear how the situation will unfold, as negotiations are on hold until later in the season.
