The San Antonio Spurs have become a contender in the space of a season. Head coach Mitch Johnson is leading a fantastic team led by Victor Wembanyama as the superstar player.

Apart from Wemby, the rest of the Spurs roster is superb. This includes De’Aaron Fox, who is not only an All-Star-level player, but he also plays a strong leadership role that everyone has noticed.

Johnson appreciates Fox’s role with the Spurs

Most people became familiar with Fox for his time with the Sacramento Kings. He was the franchise cornerstone for that team, which peaked during the 2022-23 season when he and Domantas Sabonis led them to the Playoffs.

Unfortunately, Fox hit his ceiling with the Kings, which led to the trade to San Antonio. It was the correct move to make for Fox’s career, and he has embraced his role as a leader because the Spurs are a mostly young team.

The Spurs have two promising guards apart from Fox, who are Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. Since both of these players are relatively young, they need an experienced veteran alongside them.

Fox has been that player, and he has been superb for the Spurs with his production and leadership. He might not be the most experienced postseason player, but his time as the Kings’ star player has translated well to the Spurs.

“You have De’Aaron Fox, who’s an All-Star player, that is saying, ‘Go do that. Go be relentless, and go be fearless.’ While he still has the ability to take over games. I think that’s really hard to do,” Johnson said about Fox’s impact on SiriusXM NBA Radio.

Fox has not gone unnoticed by the Spurs coaching staff, and they will be ready to uplift him. Moving forward, the Spurs will have a stronger team, and they will be spearheaded by Wembanyama’s star power and Fox’s ability to be his running mate.
