The Florida State Seminoles, Auburn Tigers, LSU Tigers, Wisconsin Badgers, and Clemson Tigers all have head football coaches with increasingly hot seats, according to ESPN’s Dan Wetzel.
Wetzel discussed FSU, Auburn, LSU, Wisconsin, and Clemson joining the likes of the Penn State Nittany Lions, Florida Gators, Arkansas Razorbacks, and UCLA Bruins on the college football coaching carousel.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys, Virginia Tech Hokies, Oregon State Beavers, UAB Blazers, Kent State Golden Eagles, and Colorado State Rams also dismissed their head coaches thus far in 2025.
“Penn State, Florida, Arkansas and UCLA have each already fired their coach this season. The mood also isn’t great at Florida State, Auburn, LSU or Wisconsin. There are even grumbles at 3-4 Clemson (among many others),” Wetzel wrote.
Clemson letting go of Dabo Swinney feels like the least likely outcome of the bunch. Though Swinney hasn’t embraced modern recruiting, opposing NIL as an idea and being stubborn about bringing on talent from the transfer portal, his two championships figure to dictate the 55-year-old’s leaving on his own terms.
As for the others, it feels only a matter of time before they’re all let go.
Mike Norvell’s locker room is laughing at him, Hugh Freeze’s offense can’t move the ball in clutch-time situations, Brian Kelly’s $18 million 2025 transfer portal/high school haul has wildly underperformed, and Luke Fickell’s team hasn’t scored since October 4.
We’ll see how cruel things will get in the college football coaching carousel. Every name on the chopping block has seemingly earned it, but there could be surprise names on the outs by season’s end based on the next six weeks.
