Luka Doncic has been on a tear to start the 2026-27 NBA season. While he was considered one of the best players in the league for a long time, he has not won the MVP award yet. In all fairness, he is in a league with plenty of unbelievable players, but it seems that he has the advantage this year.
Doncic has cemented himself as the main man for the Los Angeles Lakers. In the 2025-26 season, there was still some doubt about that, but with LeBron James’ exit, Doncic is the undisputed #1. He has delivered on that because he is playing out of his mind to start the season.
Carmelo Anthony sees Luka Doncic winning the 2026-27 NBA MVP
Doncic has been the most dangerous player in the league this season. In eight games, Doncic is averaging a whopping 38.5 points, 8.1 rebounds, and eight assists per game. Those numbers show just how impactful Doncic has been to start the year.
The Lakers are second in the Western Conference with a 7-2 record. That is mostly because of Doncic and his impact for the Lakers because he is dominating the ball, and he is controlling it with his scoring and playmaking. It has led to legitimate hype about him potentially winning the MVP award.

In the past few years, Doncic has played at an elite level. However, he has had a pathway to the award blocked by generational talents like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic. Now, Doncic is the frontrunner even though he has some stiff competition from players like Victor Wembanyama.
Someone who wholeheartedly believes in the Doncic MVP campaign is NBA legend Carmelo Anthony. The renowned pure scorer sees Doncic as the favorite to win the award.
“Like if you get a healthy Luka, in-shape Luka and, like, focused Luka. Giving effort on the defensive end, Luka, like, just commenting on that part of it, you know what I mean? That’s a different Luka right there. If that’s sustainable, we’re talking about the West a lot different,” Anthony said on his 7 PM in Brooklyn podcast.
Of course, it is still early in the season, so the MVP race is not yet hitting its apex. However, Doncic has done well to jump off the line, and he is leading the race through the first few games of the year. However, he still has a lot of games to play and opponents to deal with.
