The Houston Texans are coming out of their Week 8 bye with a poor 2-5 record, looking for a win in Week 9 against the winless Los Angeles Chargers.
While there should be plenty of belief in the Texans to beat the Chargers this week, they did get some bad news about their number one running back, David Montgomery.
According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 Houston, Texans’ head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters that Montgomery would be out for another week, though he made some progress that bodes well for a return in the near future.
Texans announce bad David Montgomery news amid groin injury
“Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said David Montgomery (groin) will still be out, week to week, and has made ‘progress,'” Wilson reports.
While Montgomery is going to miss Week 9, and his status going forward will continue to be up in the air, it’s good to hear that he’s making progress.
Coming out of the Texans’ Week 8 bye, backup running back Woody Marks will be the lead back going forward. He’s shown some flashes since taking over, and he’ll face a leaky Chargers defense with a chance to further prove his worth this season.
Montgomery meanwhile will miss another game, making it his third game he’s missed with this groin injury he suffered against the Tennessee Titans back in Week 5.

This update from Ryans does point to Montgomery getting closer to a return, and considering the Texans didn’t place him on injured reserve, a Week 10 return would seemingly be in play.
With Montgomery being ruled out for Week 9, he’ll have missed four weeks due to this injury, but only three total games. Week 10 is in play, but even if he misses that game, a Week 11 return against the Indianapolis Colts would be welcomed.
The Texans, at 2-5, are running out of time to contend for a playoff spot and the AFC South. Getting healthy, including getting Montgomery back, would help. But that’s going to have to wait a week, as he’s been ruled out for Week 9.
