The Kansas City Chiefs are currently on a two-game losing streak, dropping games to the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos to fall to 5-2 on the season.
Part of why the Chiefs lost those games was thanks to kicker Harrison Butker. He’s really struggling this season, as he missed a field goal in Week 8 in the loss to the Broncos, and he missed two kicks against the Seattle Seahawks as well.
However, according to Nate Taylor of ESPN, Andy Reid made an announcement to reporters prior to Week 9, when they face the New York Jets, that Butker will remain the team’s starting kicker for at least another week.
Chiefs keep Harrison Butker as starting K despite struggles
“Harrison Butker will be in,” Reid told reporters Wednesday morning prior to Week 9’s matchup against the Jets.
The Chiefs are not making a kicker change, at least not yet. Butker, who’s gone a horrible 12 of 18 on field goal tries this season with a long of just 50 yards, is keeping his job for one more week.
If Butker continues to struggle, which wouldn’t be a surprise after he’s already surpassed his five missed kicks from the 2025 season in just seven games, then next in line to kick for the Chiefs would be Justin Tucker.

The controversial addition of Tucker hasn’t played out at the NFL stage just yet, as he remains on the practice squad. But with how much Butker is struggling, the Chiefs might make a change soon.
Reid, for now, is sticking with his veteran kicker. He might not be long for the starting job, however, as the Chiefs might feel forced to make a change if he continues to miss kicks like he has this season.
This update from Reid’s Wednesday press conference reveals Butker is getting at least another week as the team’s starting kicker. He’s missed six kicks this season, but the Chiefs aren’t making a change just yet.
