Two managers under pressure in the so-called ‘big six’ of the Premier League face off at Stamford Bridge as Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea come up against Michael Carrick’s Manchester United.

Chelsea come into this one on the back of a tough week after a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, just the second loss at Stamford Bridge against Spurs in 36 years, before a penalty shootout loss to Liverpool on Alonso’s return to Anfield in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

The Blues had started this season in entertaining fashion and their ceiling remains high but their inconsistency is undermining Alonso and Chelsea thus far with growing frustration within the fanbase.

Michael Carrick has been kept in place at Manchester United after crisis talks this week with The Red Devils having won just two of their 12 matches across all competitions so far this season.

After a 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League, outspoken and critical captain Bruno Fernandes was dropped and United then succumbed to a 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth last week.

Chelsea vs. Man United prediction

We do still expect Chelsea to come out on form despite inconsistencies.

Chelsea haven’t necessarily performed well enough to suggest they should be trusted in any game at the moment but, with home advantage and the state of their opposition, a home win remains the way to go.

United have been a mess for so long now that it becomes repetitive for fans and neutrals but same failings are recurring now, with nothing seemingly changing over the week, despite Fernandes and Carrick at least having reportedly had a bit of a chat.

Score Prediction: Chelsea 2, Man United 0 (+1000 at FanDuel)

Chelsea vs. Man United best bets

We’ve picked three betting angles for Chelsea vs. Man United.

Chelsea have been unconvincing due to their inconsistency but, at their best, they can be brilliant to watch going forward, as was the case in a 5-1 defeat of now in-form Bournemouth a couple of weeks ago.

Man United this season
PLAYED WON DRAWN LOST
12 2 4 6

Backing Chelsea is certainly more to do with the form of United, though, with two wins in 12 games and those victories coming against Azeri champions Sabah and from behind against newly-promoted Ipswich Town.

Morgan Rogers began to lose his head against Spurs last week but was improved in midweek and with Chelsea likely to have the better of it, backing the England international to score or assist is good value at Paddy Power.

With the absence of Joao Pedro, it was a surprise for Danny Welbeck to not start last week and it didn’t work without a focal point so the former United man should come back into the eleven here, as he did against Liverpool, and backing him to have a shot on target is therefore worthwhile.
