Providence did more than win a recruiting battle Wednesday. The Friars landed a commitment that gives first-year coach Bryan Hodgson a centerpiece for the program he is trying to build.

Five-star center Lewis Uvwo chose Providence over Kentucky, Baylor and California. He is ranked No. 7 nationally in the 2027 class by 247Sports and is considered the top center in his class. At 6-foot-10 with a reported 7-foot-6 wingspan, Uvwo brings the size and defensive reach that can change how opponents attack the paint.

Friars get their guy

The commitment also has some unusual historical interest for Providence. Uvwo is the highest-ranked recruit in the program’s history in 247Sports’ database, tied with former Friars Ricky Ledo and Kris Dunn. He is also only the third five-star recruit Providence has landed in the 247Sports era.

That makes the decision a major early test of Hodgson’s pitch. Uvwo said Providence stood out because of its people and culture, and because he saw a chance to help the program reach new heights. He also credited Hodgson’s track record and his vision for the team. The Friars hired Hodgson in March after his season at South Florida, so landing a top-10 prospect before coaching his first game is a significant statement about the direction he is selling.

Still work to do

Uvwo’s commitment doesn’t guarantee immediate Big East contention. Recruiting rankings can’t predict how quickly a freshman adjusts to college basketball, and Providence still has to build a roster around him. But a high-level center gives the Friars a foundation they can recruit around: guards who can feed the post, shooters who benefit from defensive attention inside and defenders who can take more risks with a long rim protector behind them.

For Kentucky, Baylor and the other programs that pursued him, the news is a reminder that the recruiting map can shift when a player sees a chance to help shape a program’s next chapter. For Providence, Hodgson now has a highly ranked recruit whose decision fits the ambition he promised to bring to campus.
