One week after failing to field a carry for the Giants, Cam Skattebo returned to prominence with a carry-laden outing against the Texans.

New York head coach John Harbaugh went to the Skattebo well early and often on Sunday, putting the ball into his gut more times than most in the opening stages of the Week 7 tilt.

One of those carries got Skattebo in hot water.

Here’s a look at why Skattebo was sanctioned for his hard-nosed play on Sunday afternoon.

Why Cam Skattebo was penalized for trucking defender

Skattebo drew the referees’ ire when he raced down the field for an eight-yard gain in the first quarter. Skattebo launched his helmet into a would-be tackler’s breastplate while surging through the trenches. Predictably, his defender went flying — an image that immediately delighted the Arizona State product.

What followed was something Skattebo didn’t appreciate.

An umpire tossed his flag to the sky, a canary dancing onto the pasture. Skattebo was deemed to have committed an act of unnecessary roughness against the defender. His violation? Lowering his helmet to make contact with his marker.

Predictably, some were left less than enthused with the decision, viewing it as a betrayal of the hard-nosed game they grew up watching.

While the league has often been criticized for its slow response to the growing mountain of evidence that the sport puts its athletes — both professional and otherwise — at increased risk of head injury, it has used sanctions to attempt to deter players from putting themselves and opponents in harm’s way.

Typically, those punishments are directed towards defenders. On Sunday, Skattebo was the subject of scrutiny.

Only time will tell if that brings about changes to his physical style of play.
