The Los Angeles Clippers entered the 2026-27 NBA season facing more questions than most teams. Wednesday night provided an encouraging answer.

Darius Garland scored 30 points as the Clippers defeated the Sacramento Kings 121-96 at Intuit Dome, opening the season with an impressive victory following a turbulent offseason. Garland made 11 of his 19 field-goal attempts and helped Los Angeles control the game against a Sacramento team attempting to rebound from its own disappointing season.

The performance was particularly important considering everything that changed within the Clippers organization. Los Angeles moved on from Kawhi Leonard during the offseason and faced league sanctions related to salary-cap circumvention.

Those developments created uncertainty surrounding the franchise’s direction. Garland’s performance provided a reminder that the Clippers still possess talented players capable of producing impressive results.

Garland provides leadership for new-look Clippers

Garland joined Los Angeles in February as part of the trade that sent James Harden to Cleveland. The former All-Star now has an opportunity to establish himself as a central figure in the Clippers’ offense. His opening-night performance demonstrated the scoring ability that made him such an attractive acquisition.

Garland attacked Sacramento’s defense, created opportunities for teammates and helped Los Angeles maintain control throughout the second half.

Brook Lopez also delivered a strong performance, finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Isaiah Jackson contributed 13 points, while Gradey Dick added 12.

The Clippers also received an encouraging performance from rookie Keaton Wagler. The No. 5 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft finished with 15 points and five assists in 29 minutes off the bench. His performance gave Los Angeles another reason to feel optimistic about its developing roster.

Sacramento’s rookie experiences difficult debut

The Kings received 28 points from Zach LaVine and 14 points with 18 rebounds from Domantas Sabonis. However, Sacramento struggled to generate consistent offense elsewhere.

Rookie point guard Darius Acuff Jr., the seventh overall selection in the draft, scored 12 points and distributed three assists in his NBA debut. The former Arkansas standout struggled with his shooting, making five of 24 field-goal attempts and missing all seven of his 3-point attempts.

Those numbers illustrate how difficult the transition to the NBA can be, even for highly regarded prospects.

Sacramento also struggled defensively.

The Clippers shot 52.4% from the field and connected on 40% of their 3-point attempts. Los Angeles recorded 14 steals, creating additional opportunities to attack. The Clippers eventually stretched their advantage to 23 points entering the fourth quarter.

For Garland, the performance was an encouraging beginning to a season that could help redefine his career. The Clippers still face considerable challenges, and one victory will not erase the questions surrounding the organization.

However, Garland’s 30-point performance provided an early reminder that Los Angeles should not be overlooked.
