The New York Yankees have a surplus of starting pitching depth.

Cam Schlittler, Max Fried, Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Will Warren, Ryan Weathers, Elmer Rodriguez, and Luis Gil are all viable options for nearly any team in the Majors.

Gil, the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year, was sent to Triple-A in April and made just nine Major League appearances in 2026, including five outings as a reliever.

Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller wrote that the Yankees could look to trade Gil this offseason. He could be a suitable fit with the Texas Rangers.

“Both Nathan Eovaldi and MacKenzie Gore will be free agents next winter, while the Rangers will need to decide whether exercising a $20M club option for what will be Jacob deGrom’s age-40 season is a good idea.

“Even ignoring that 2028 dilemma, though, they could really use another arm for 2027, as they don’t have a single returning pitcher (even including that big three) who made at least six starts with a sub-4.20 ERA in 2026,” Miller wrote.

The Yankees don’t really need Gil, and his future with the organization is murkier than ever due to injury and inconsistency.

Texas could use another starter, but Gil’s trade value (if he has any) has to be relatively low.

He continues to struggle with command after walking 18 batters in 27.1 innings during an up-and-down year.
