Last week, the Philadelphia Eagles announced that star quarterback Jalen Hurts wouldn’t be playing in Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers due to a blood clot. However, it seemed to be a one-and-done kind of deal, and there wasn’t any mention of him being out for a very long time.
That’s changed, though, and the Eagles announced on Saturday that they’re placing Hurts on injured reserve. The team shared the news in a post on X, stating that Hurts would be on the injured reserve list and that it was also signing running back Jaydon Blue to the active roster. They’re also elevating Keyshawn James-Newby and Cole Wisniewski for the upcoming game.
Earlier on Saturday, ESPN reported that the team had “not even discussed the possibility of injured reserve,” so this is quite a turn of events.
Jalen Hurts’ injured reserve placement raises questions about when the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback could return from his blood clot
Up next, the Eagles take on the Panthers, followed by the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Commanders and New York Giants. Then, they have a bye week. So, Hurts could return after the bye, but it appears he’s currently out for an undisclosed amount of time.
Blood clots are no easy fix. Many players who develop them have to go on blood thinners, depending on the type and severity of the clot. He could be our four weeks or longer.
“Most first-time deep vein clots require blood thinners for only a period of time — possibly a few weeks — and then observation,” Dr. Ashwin Rao told The Athletic in a report about Hurts. “If the clot is resolving, the blood thinners can be stopped. If someone has experienced multiple blood clots, that could mean a lifetime on a blood thinner.”
Backup quarterback Tanner McKee will get the start in place of Hurts, with rookie Cole Payton behind him. Joe Milton is also on the Eagles’ quarterback roster.
