The Chicago Bears are without franchise quarterback Caleb Williams, and they’ve still been able to win games, which is impressive. But that didn’t happen on Sunday. Instead, the Bears fell hard to the Green Bay Packers, 31-7.

During the game, Bears head coach Ben Johnson benched quarterback Tyson Bagent and put in Case Keenum to see if they could get a better result. They still lost, and after the game, Johnson talked about that quarterback decision.

Ben Johnson explains why he benched Tyson Bagent

“We just wanted a little spark there,” Johnson told reporters in a presser. “Tyson, just could never feel like he got in a rhythm here today. We’ll look at why that was the case. The second interception happened and we just felt like, let’s give Case a chance out there and see if we get different results.”

Bagent talked about being benched in the postgame presser, too. He said he’d use it as motivation and that he needs to play better.

“Obviously you would definitely not want to be benched, especially in a game like this, especially with the opportunity that I’ve been blessed with,” Bagent said, according to ESPN. “But end of the day, these things happen, I’ve got to play better. And like I said, got to look in the mirror, got to see where I can continue to get better because there’s a lot of things still, even this far into my career, that I can certainly get back.”

Williams is still recovering from a hamstring injury, but it’s possible he’ll be ready to take the field against the Falcons next week, Johnson also said during the presser. If he isn’t able to come back, Johnson didn’t say whether Bagent or Keenum will get the start. Johnson said the Bears coaching staff would figure that out this week.
