The San Francisco 49ers are getting some much-needed help on their injury-plagued defensive line as defensive end Mykel Williams prepares to make his 2026 season debut Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.

Williams is expected to return nearly a year after suffering a torn ACL and meniscus damage in his right knee during San Francisco’s November 2, 2025, matchup against the New York Giants.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the team plans to activate Williams from the physically unable to perform list Saturday after two encouraging weeks of practice.

“He’s had a good two weeks,” Shanahan said. “It was good last week, and this week’s been even better. Ready to get him back out there on the field.”

Williams’ return couldn’t come at a better time for San Francisco, which has experienced significant injuries across its defensive front.

49ers get huge reinforcement

The 49ers have lost Nick Bosa, Sam Okuayinonu, Alfred Collins, C.J. West and James Thompson Jr. to various injuries, creating an urgent need for additional defensive depth.

During his rookie campaign, Williams appeared in nine games, recording 20 tackles and one sack while averaging approximately 45 defensive snaps per contest.

Now healthier, leaner and quicker, Williams believes he’s prepared to contribute immediately.

“I’m losing my mind,” Williams said about watching his teammates struggle through injuries. “I’m ready to go, though. I’m excited to play ball. I miss playing ball.”

Williams joins a defensive end rotation featuring Keion White, Khalid Kareem and rookie Romello Height.

Shanahan indicated Williams won’t face predetermined snap restrictions, although coaches will monitor his performance throughout the game.

“When he’s out there, he’ll be full go,” Shanahan said.

San Francisco also received encouraging news regarding wide receiver Mike Evans, who has been cleared to play despite dealing with a rib injury.

With a divisional matchup approaching, Williams’ return provides San Francisco an opportunity to strengthen its pass rush and restore some stability to a defensive unit desperately needing reinforcements.
