The Denver Broncos are 2-2 on the season, which isn’t a bad spot to be in, but the team is clearly feeling the pressure mounting early in the year.

Patrick Surtain II is out for a few weeks, and the offense has been very underwhelming so far as well. Davis Webb, the new playcaller and offensive coordinator, has not been doing a great job so far this year.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Sean Payton has seemingly seen enough, and he’s making a change. Payton is reportedly taking over some offensive responsibilities, as the Broncos are making a big change to their offense after just four weeks.

Broncos to make huge offensive change amid Sean Payton, Davis Webb collaboration

“Broncos coach Sean Payton will be more heavily involved in offensive play-calling this week, sources told me and @MikeGarafolo,” Rapoport reports. “The process will remain collaborative, with OC Davis Webb continuing to be a major voice on game day and during the week. But Payton will have say.”

While this report from Rapoport doesn’t outright state that Payton is fully taking over play-calling duties, the signs are pointing towards this being Payton’s offense.

Webb is still expected to have a major role in this offense, but with Payton taking over some, and potentially all, of the play-calling duties, the Broncos appear ready for some major change on offense after just four weeks.

This season, the Broncos offense has scored 74 points, or 18.5 points per game. With their defense struggling a bit, allowing 23.5 points per game, this Broncos team is not in a great spot right now.

But brighter days should be ahead. This Broncos team has faced one of the toughest gauntlets of defenses in the NFL through the first four weeks.

The Kansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Rams, and San Francisco 49ers are all likely top-10 defenses in the NFL this season. Struggling against those teams is not a surprise.

But with Bo Nix seemingly regressing, Jaylen Waddle and Courtland Sutton not being as involved in the offense as they should be, and the run game being very underwhelming at 81.3 yards per game, a change for this offense does make sense.

It might seem early, but Payton is an experienced coach in the NFL. If he’s seen something that’s worrying him, then a change to the offense makes sense.

Rapoport’s report indicates this will be a collaborative approach for Payton and Webb, but fans should expect to see a lot more of Payton’s influence going forward with this struggling offense.
