The Seattle Seahawks are adding some veteran insurance to a depleted backfield.
Seattle plans to sign veteran running back Joe Mixon to its practice squad, pending a physical, according to ESPN. Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald confirmed Monday that Mixon worked out for the team and is going through the process of joining the roster.
“Joe worked out this morning and he’s going through the process right now,” Macdonald said.
The move comes at a critical time for Seattle. Rookie Jadarian Price, the Seahawks’ first-round pick and leading running back, was placed on injured reserve with a chest injury and will miss at least three more games. Practice-squad running back Jacardia Wright is also dealing with a foot injury.
“We’re down runners,” Macdonald said. “We need running backs. He’s a good running back.”
Seahawks taking chance
Mixon, 30, could provide Seattle with an experienced option if he proves healthy. The two-time Pro Bowler missed the entire 2025 season with a foot injury and was released by the Houston Texans in March. However, his last healthy season showed he could still produce at a high level.
In 2024, Mixon rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns during his first season with Houston, earning his second career Pro Bowl selection.
For now, Emanuel Wilson has taken over as Seattle’s lead back. He delivered Sunday in a 30-23 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, rushing for 81 yards on 21 carries while adding three receptions for 39 yards. Wilson also scored once rushing and once receiving.
George Holani is currently Seattle’s No. 2 option, while Velus Jones Jr. provides additional depth. Zach Charbonnet has returned to practice following last season’s ACL injury but will not play this weekend against the San Francisco 49ers.
Mixon would bring an impressive résumé to Seattle. The former Cincinnati Bengals standout has rushed for 7,428 yards and 60 touchdowns during his career while adding 2,448 receiving yards and 14 touchdown catches.
If Mixon passes his physical, Seattle could be getting an accomplished veteran at exactly the right time.
