When it comes to the availability of the Eagles‘ key players, things went from bad to worse on Sunday.

Coming into a Week 4 matchup against the Rams, Philadelphia had already ruled out tight end Dallas Goedert, wide receiver Devonta Smith and linebacker Zack Baun with injuries, while star defensive tackle Jalen Carter is reportedly playing through an injury.

Then, not only was standout right tackle Lane Johnson ruled out for personal reasons against Los Angeles, but star running back Saquon Barkley left the game early with a hamstring injury.

Here’s the latest on Barkley and how his injury adds to a long list of health concerns for Philadelphia.

What Saquon Barkley’s injury means Eagles with ongoing health issues

Barkley came up limping in the first quarter against the Rams after a big gain, running onto the sideline and jumping in the air through the pain before bending down onto the ground.

He was later seen going to the locker room, and the Eagles announced he was questionable to return with a hamstring injury. He was ruled out by the second quarter.

Afterward, it was backup Tank Bigsby who entered for Barkley — but in general, it put the Eagles at an even more short-handed spot offensively.

Early in the season, Goedert went down with a knee injury, which led Philadelphia to sign former franchise star Zach Ertz as a depth option. Smith, meanwhile, is dealing with a hamstring injury and did not practice prior to Week 4. According to Jeff McLane, the star wideout has a chance to miss multiple games.

With Goedert, Smith and Hollywood Brown all out for Week 4, Jalen Hurts’ targets were already depleted — and then, Barkley went down, forcing the Eagles to dive deeper into an all-hands-on-deck approach.

As things stand, the Eagles’ tight end room is led by Ertz and Johnny Mundt. Their wide receiver room is led by Dontayvion Wicks, Makai Lemon and Darius Cooper. And with Barkley out, the running back room is led by Bigsby and Will Shipley. It’s a list of unproven weapons for Hurts, who will have to maximize whatever he can.

Add in Johnson’s absence in Week 4 for personal reasons — with the Eagles going just 18-29 in games without him in his career — and it’s an extremely beat-up Philadelphia offense being rolled out for the remainder of Week 4.

Eagles RB depth chart

Rank Player
1 Saquon Barkley (questionable)
2 Tank Bigsby
3 Will Shipley

With Barkley being ruled out for the remainder of Week 4, Bigsby is in line to take a majority of the snaps in the backfield. He’s picked up 36 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries so far this season, and has played well as the lead back in Barkley’s absence previously.

Shipley figures to be more of a receiving back, but he could also become a critical piece of the offense without Barkley.
