The fight for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy begins Saturday as Navy visits Air Force.
The Midshipmen have prevailed in the service academy round-robin the last two years and will look to maintain that momentum with a much-needed win in Colorado Springs after taking narrow defeats in their last two games.
Those conference losses at Florida Atlantic and UAB leave Navy still seeking its first FBS win of the year, with its lone victory coming in the opener against Towson. The Falcons have a bit more momentum thanks to last week’s double-overtime win at Nevada, which helped them shake off a home loss to FBS newcomer North Dakota State.
While these rivalry games tend to be unpredictable, one thing is certain: passing will be at a minimum. These teams are tied for second in the country behind Army with 333.7 rushing yards per game, with each averaging fewer than 100 yards through the air. Both quarterbacks, Air Force’s Liam Szarka and Navy’s Jackson Gutierrez, have more rushing than passing yards and the pair have combined for nine TDs on the ground.
This one should be an old-school football purist’s delight. Here’s when and where to tune in.
