New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo had made headlines with his play through seven weeks, but he was dealt a disatrous blow in Week 8 of his rookie season.
As Skattebo and the Giants looked to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles for the second time in three weeks, Skattebo sustained a gruesome injury that drew a visceral reaction from anyone close enough to witness. In the immediate aftermath, Skattebo’s foot was placed in an air cast and he was carted off the field.
The severity of the injury was made evident by the circumstance, and the focus now shifts forward to what it means for Skattebo’s immediate — and distant — future.
Here is everything to know about Skattebo’s injury designation and how much time he will be away from the field.

The closest teammate to him was offensive lineman Greg Van Roten. About the injury, he said, “I saw him on the ground with his leg trapped. When he pulled it out, you could see his foot was the wrong way. Obviously, that is not normal. I just wanted [Skattebo] to stay down, called the trainers out, get the cart. Put the [ankle] back basically. It’s hard to see stuff like that.”
Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart has developed a fast relationship with Skattebo. When the other half of the dynamic duo went down, Dart said, “Yeah, I was devastated. It’s my boy, man. So seeing him go down and obviously reacting to what happened, that sucks. It’s the worst part of this game.”
Veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton also provided a comment, saying, “It’s really hard to see, a young guy who was having a heck of a year. Somebody who is a unifying personality, an energetic personality. It’s sad to see him go down.”
How long is Cam Skattebo out?
Skattebo’s injury required that the rookie have surgery. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the injury will end Skattebo’s rookie season. Assuming that is the case, the running back will turn his attention to getting back on the field for the 2026 season.
