The Bristol Bears came away with their biggest ever win against close opponents Gloucester Rugby at Kingsholm, with a 34 – 49 victory and a huge seven tries from the visitors.
Bristol Bears vs Gloucester Match Report
It was a particularly special match for new Bear Sam Worsley, who not only scored his first PREM try, but also began the scoreboard after he dived in the left corner in the fifth minute.
The fly-half was a key aspect of the Bears success, racking up 19 points for his team with his pinpoint conversions which helped keep Gloucester at bay.
And every point was needed in a match which saw both sides baying for blood. By half time, both sides had three tries apiece with Bristol leading by just a singular point 21 – 20.
An injury plagued season
It has been a tricky start to the season for both sides, with Gloucester’s worst season-beginning in history, and both teams being plagued with injuries. Ollie Thorley was added to the Cherry and Whites’ injury list after he attempted a tackle in the early minutes of the game, which resulted in him being stretchered off the field.
Despite functioning with a reduced squad, the Bears were able to convert their possession and metres far more effectively than Gloucester, who held the ball for the majority of the match.
This was shown from the very start of the second half, as the Bears came out of the break roaring, and their famously strong maul saw Gabriel Oghre secure his second try of the match and a bonus point.
Gloucester quickly responded though, keeping themselves strongly in the running after Josiah Edwards-Giraud and Will Joseph spun the ball between them for Gloucester’s own fourth try.
There was still all to play for with just eight minutes left of the game and Gloucester trailing by just one point, but the Bears were able to kick into another gear courtesy of Kalaveti Ravouvou, who clocked in two tries in rapid succession to allow the Bears to fly to a convincing finish.
