The 2025 UCI Road World Championships in Kigali, Rwanda will open on Sunday with the individual time trials, bringing an immediate test of raw power and pace to Africa’s first-ever Worlds.
The elite women will race over a 31.2-kilometre route that climbs 460 metres, where the rainbow jersey will go to whoever best balances speed with the punishing gradients.
With reigning champion Grace Brown of Australia retiring from the sport last year, there will be plenty of contenders for the throne, including former champion Chloe Dygert of the USA.
Just hours later, the men’s time trial will roll out over 40.6 kilometres with 680 metres of elevation, setting up a blockbuster duel between two-time defending champion Remco Evenepoel and Tour de France star Tadej Pogačar.
While the hilly terrain may give Pogačar a slight advantage compared to previous years, specialists like former champion Filippo Ganna have stayed away.
