The Minnesota Vikings have an injury concern with running back Aaron Jones, so they’re adding a veteran rusher to the roster.
According to Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com, the Vikings are signing veteran running back Cam Akers. It isn’t clear if he’ll be added to the practice squad of 53-man roster.
The move comes after Jones suffered a hamstring injury in Week 2. Head coach Kevin O’Connell noted that Jones isn’t expected to play in Week 3.
Akers appeared in six games with the Vikings in 2023, and then in 12 games in 2024. Last season, he tallied 64 carries for 297 yards and one touchdown while also adding 10 receptions for 52 yards and another two scores.
Akers was a second-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 2020 and showed some promise early on, but injuries derailed his career. Among those injuries were two Achilles tears, one in 2023 and another in 2021.
With Jones sidelined, Jordan Mason is expected to be the clear lead back. Mason was easily the more impressive back for Minnesota over the first two weeks.
The Vikings also took a hit to their depth after Ty Chandler landed on injured reserve. Akers will likely play the RB2 role in his first game back with Minnesota.
The Vikings also have Zavier Scott on the 53-man roster and Xazavian Valladay on the practice squad.
