When the White Sox host the Cardinals in Game 1 of their double-header on Thursday, they will see a familiar foe. Erick Fedde, a 32-year-old from Las Vegas, made 21 starts for the White Sox a season ago. During those starts, he went 7–4 with a 3.11 earned run average. He was a bright spot in an otherwise disastrous season.

Fedde was still in the first season of his two-year, $15 million contract before the White Sox parted ways via trade. The trade came on July 29, when the Cardinals and White Sox joined the Dodgers in a three-team deal. Many speculate Fedde could be traded again at the 2025 deadline.

The White Sox acquired Miguel Vargas, Alexander Albertys, Jeral Perez, and a player to be named later in the transaction.

Vargas has been one of the lone bright spots for Will Venable’s squad. The White Sox are 23–50 and have dropped six straight games, but Vargas leads the team in many offensive categories including home runs, RBI, hits and total bases.

The 25-year-old from Cuba has played in 70 of the 73 games and has 287 plate appearances, 29 more than Luis Robert. Vargas is hitting .242 and leads the team with 10 home runs, 19 doubles, 36 runs scored, and 31 runs batted in.

Fedde will make his 15th start of the season against the White Sox. He has thrown 79 innings and is 3-6 on the season. His ERA is 3.65, and he has struck out 51 batters while walking 34. He will look for his first win since May 9 against the Washington Nationals.

When the White Sox step to the plate on Thursday, only two players will have faced Fedde in their careers. Josh Rojas is 3-for-12 against the right-hander, while Mike Tauchman has gone 2-for-5.
