  • Steelers add offensive firepower with Jonnu Smith trade in wild day for Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Steelers weren’t done with their Jalen Ramsey acquisition for Minkah Fitzpatrick.

They decided they needed another star from the Miami Dolphins.

Add Jonnu Smith to the mix.

He’s coming to Pittsburgh in exchange for a late-round pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It was a rapid-fire 20 minutes on Monday morning as news of the deals slowly leaked out. Rather than the often-standard of the details all coming out almost simultaneously, these moves came out one by one.

It made it quite an unveiling of what exactly was happening for the Steelers, but in the end, they get Ramsey and Smith.

Smith is an exciting pickup. Yeah, he’s a tight end, but he’s not like incumbent starter Pat Freiermuth.

Jonnu is an after-catch wizard. The Dolphins often used him on screens or other gadget plays to get him in space and let him run with the football in his hands.

He can play as an in-line tight end, too, but that likely affects second TE Darnell Washington more than it will Freiermuth, who is an established and trusted presence in Pittsburgh.

Smith gives Aaron Rodgers someone to throw to on simple passes that can still turn into big plays, which are a quarterback’s best friend.

The Steelers gave Smith a one-year contract extension for $12 million, too, which likely makes this just as exciting a move for him.
