The Boston Red Sox made a blockbuster trade earlier this week when they sent Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. The team just made another trade, although quite less splashy.

The Red Sox have traded Zach Penrod to the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. Penrod was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster after the Rafael Devers trade.

Penrod signed as an undrafted free agent with the Texas Rangers in 2018, but found himself playing in the Pioneer League in 2021. He found his way back to affiliated ball in 2023 for the Red Sox organization. He made his debut in the big leagues last September. He had a 2.25 ERA in seven games, but was unable to make the opening day roster this year.

“He was in spring training and had an outside chance to make the Opening Day roster, but suffered an elbow injury and was shut down,” wrote Cotillo. “The injury, described as an elbow sprain, did not require surgery and Penrod resumed throwing in the early parts of the season. He has been pitching in Worcester, where he has allowed four earned runs and seven hits in 6 ⅓ innings.”

With two new big league pitchers joining the team, Penrod became the player who was no longer needed. However, on the Dodgers, he may get an opportunity that was never really in the cards in Boston.

“Penrod had fallen behind on Boston’s depth chart once the Sox signed lefty relievers Aroldis Chapman and Justin Wilson to join Brennan Bernardino in the mix this season,” wrote Cotillo. “The club also has Chris Murphy rehabbing with the WooSox and in the 40-man mix. With Los Angeles, Penrod will have an opportunity to contribute to a playoff run, though he might start at Triple-A.”
