The Boston Red Sox starting rotation has been a disappointment for the most part. Garrett Crochet has been great, but the rest of the rotation has been holding the team back.
Despite underperforming this season, the Red Sox are still within striking distance of a wild card spot. They are getting Alex Bregman back soon, and they can make a late push to play October baseball. FanSided’s Stephen Parello suggested the team trade for Zac Gallen of the Arizona Diamondbacks to help them get into the postseason.
“Zac Gallen, 29, is another arm with frontline stuff who has struggled to pitch to his reputation,” wrote Parello. “A free agent at the end of the year, Gallen’s performance started off poorly and has actually gotten worse as the season has gone on, making him a gamble. If the Red Sox believe in his stuff, they could try to pry him away from the Arizona Diamondbacks and then take advantage of his rough season to sign the free-agent-to-be to a team-friendly extension.”
Gallen has a 5.45 ERA this year. He is going to be a free agent after the season. Even with his struggles, he may be better than Walker Buehler has been.
Gallen finished top five in the National League Cy Young Award race in 2022 and 2023. He was an All-Star in 2023 and is projected to sign a six-year, $116 million deal in the offseason. He had a 3.20 ERA from 2022 to 2024, and if he can find something close to that level of production for the Red Sox, he would be a huge addition.

The Red Sox are just 2 1/2 games back of a wild card spot entering play on Saturday. The postseason is not a long shot by any means, but it may become one if the team cannot get some help behind Crochet.
