  • Pep Guardiola confirms Man City star’s injury after Club World Cup exit

Manchester City‘s journey in the Club World Cup came to an end with their 4-3 loss against Al-Hilal in the Round of 16 of the Club World Cup on June 30 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

After being tied 3-3 at the end of 90 minutes, Al-Hilal found their winning goal in the 112th minute of extra time, knocking Man City out of the competition.

Along with their elimination, there is more bad news for Man City as one of their stars, Rodri, appeared to have picked up an injury during the match.

Following their disheartening loss, Man City head coach Pep Guardiola provided an update on Rodri’s situation.

What did Man City boss Pep Guardiola say about Rodri’s injury?

Rodri came off the bench against Al-Hilal in the 53rd minute to replace Ilkay Gundogan on the pitch. However, the Ballon d’Or winner was seen being unexpectedly subbed off by Phil Foden in extra time.

Speaking after the match, Guardiola addressed (comments via The Mirror) Rodri’s substitution and hinted at a possible injury without giving out many details.

“We have to see Rodri, he complained about his situation, but we need time to come back,” said the Catalan manager.

Rodri had an injury-riddled run for the majority of the 2024/25 campaign, starting with his hamstring injury that kept him off the pitch at the beginning of the season.

The 29-year-old, then, suffered a cruciate ligament tear in September last year and was sidelined for the remainder of the campaign. He missed 50 matches for Man City and managed to make only four appearances.

Guardiola & Co. will be hoping that Rodri’s recent injury is not a major one with a new season approaching. Man City will face Wolverhampton Wanderers in their first Premier League clash of the 2025/26 season on August 16 at Molineux Stadium.
