  • Man United accelerate interest in Serie A goalkeeper as Andre Onana’s replacement

Manchester United are all set to go through wholesale changes this summer as Ruben Amorim is desperate to improve the performances in the upcoming season. They have already unveiled Matheus Cunha as their first signing, while they are working on others.

One primary area which was extremely concerning was the goalkeeping spot, where Andre Onana had an underwhelming season as the Cameroonian star has struggled mostly to settle at Old Trafford following his move from Inter Milan in 2023.

He was the subject of many speculations and criticisms for his performances last season, and with United going through a transformation, Onana could well be on his way out of the Premier League outfit.

As per Sky Sports, Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco have shown interest in signing the 29-year-old. The Cameroonian hasn’t ruled out the prospect of leaving the club this summer.

Amidst a lot of uncertainty, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, United have held talks with Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi. The 24-year-old gloveman is considered one of Italy’s rising stars in that position.

Amorim has seen great potential in Carnesecchi and has decided to land him in Manchester. He had a big hand in helping Atalanta finish third in the Serie A last season and people at United believe that he would be a big upgrade over the Cameroonian.

Who is Marco Carnesecchi?

Hailing from Rimini in Northern Italy, Carnesecchi started his youth career at Cesena before moving to Atalanta in 2017. He broke into the senior team at Atalanta in a couple of years in 2019 and was loaned out to FC Trapani in Serie B.

He later spent two and a half seasons on loan at Cremonese before moving back to Atalanta, and in the last two seasons, he has been a standout player for the club.

However, he has reportedly extended his contract earlier this year, which will run till 2028. Therefore, Atalanta are in a firm position in this transfer and could demand €50m (£42.7m) transfer fee for the talented goalkeeper.

Former Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini, who recently became Roma’s new manager after nine long years at Atalanta, shares his verdict about the 24-year-old.

“He is providing extraordinary performances with some decisive saves,” Gasperini said about the young goalkeeper. “He is a goalkeeper who has become important, he is always ready, he has certainly been decisive in these last matches. He will still improve in his game with his feet, but he has all the numbers.”

Carnesecchi registered 13 cleansheets in 34 Serie A games last season with a save accuracy rate of 75.2%. He is one for the future for the Azzurri, and therefore, United are keen to get the deal done.
