  • Lothar Matthaus wants Bayern Munich to reconsider star player’s contract following Musiala’s injury

Bayern Munich’s Club World Cup journey came to a horror end on Saturday as they lost 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

But more than the defeat, it was the injury to Jamal Musiala which grabbed the headlines from this fixture. The German star suffered a horrific ankle injury following his collision with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the first half.

The second half saw Desire Doue and later substitute Ousmane Dembele score goals for PSG, guiding them to the semifinals of the tournament.

According to reports via BILD, Musiala has broken his left fibula and damaged a few ligaments. He is reportedly out for at least 4-5 months.

Considering the 22-year-old just returned from injury and this was his first start, it feels even more gut-wrenching for the Bavarians and specifically for the player.

On the other hand, Bayern have struggled securing their targets this summer and with Musiala getting sidelined for the majority of the 2025/26 campaign, the German champions desperately need to sign players in that role.

Meanwhile, former Bayern midfielder and football pundit Lothar Matthaus has urged the Bavarians to offer a short six-month contract to outgoing legend Thomas Muller due to Musiala’s injury.

“Jamal Musiala’s injury totally shocked me, especially after he had fought his way back into the starting lineup. I wish him all the best. In this situation, FC Bayern should consider whether to give Thomas Müller a six-month contract,” Matthaus told BILD

“The season in the USA only starts by then, and in the meantime, he could be a great help to FC Bayern. Bayern did something similar with me when I moved to the New York Metro Stars. The fans would certainly be happy, too.”

Officially, Muller has played his last match for Bayern Munich after the management decided not to extend his contract beyond the 2024/25 season.

What did Thomas Muller say about the six-month contract suggestion?

Multiple reports suggest that Muller may move to Major League Soccer in the United States following his illustrious stint with Bayern Munich.

However, nothing was confirmed as the veteran attacker was featuring for the Bavarians at the Club World Cup.

When asked about Matthaus’ suggestion of a six-month contract to help Bayern during the time Musiala remains out of action, he told DAZN Germany, “I understand why you ask this question, but it’s a bit – I’m not saying tasteless – but it feels uncomfortable to me.”

Even Bayern chief Max Eberl didn’t entertain such an idea after the PSG defeat, as he said, “That’s not in our thoughts. We didn’t talk about that.”

The Bavarians continue to search for a high-profile left winger this summer, but now they may also look for a number 10 who could play behind Harry Kane in Musiala’s absence.
