One of the most impactful moves of the offseason came when the Detroit Tigers signed free agent second baseman Gleyber Torres to a one-year, $15 million deal.
He slotted into the starting second baseman’s job and has been so incredible, he was named the AL starting second baseman for the All-Star team.
After the announcement from Major League Baseball, Torres shared his reaction with Byron Kerr of MLB.com to the news. He also touched on the offseason decision and how it’s played out through the first half of the year.
“Before signing, I really got interested in the city, how they’ve been doing,” Torres said. “I know how they played last year. I know a little bit about the NFL team and also the hockey team.”
Before making his decision, he invested time in learning about the city of Detroit. After going through the offseason process, he made his decision and joined the Tigers. It’s been an amazing move for both sides.
Torres made the All-Star team and has a .282 batting average and a .429 slugging percentage, along with a .815 OPS, through the first half of the season. Torres has been incredible in Detroit and has helped make this season a special one for Tigers fans.
“It’s going to be the moment to represent Detroit,” Torres said. “Represent the fans at the All-Star game and keep doing the right work for the second half, because as a team, we have to finish strong.”

The Tigers are one of baseball’s top teams this season, thanks in part to Torres having a strong season so far. Being able to join the Tigers and play at such a high level has Torres reflecting on what the past few months have been like.
“It’s been an honor,” Torres said. “It’s been pretty special. Especially this year, (to get the) opportunity to play with a special team. The All-Star game is really special. I really enjoy it. Baez and Greene (are going) with me so far. Hopefully, more people can come later. To go there and represent Detroit, it’s going to be special.”
In what’s already been a special season, Torres looks back on how the team got here and how special it can still be. There’s plenty of room for the Tigers to make the 2025 season all the more memorable.
With a spot in the postseason on the horizon, the Tigers and Torres will have a chance to make this year special. It’s been an incredible year so far, and his offseason decision to join Detroit has more than worked out so far.
