  • Former Cardinals 2.23 ERA pitcher signs with Diamondbacks as injuries mount

The St. Louis Cardinals have utilized multiple players over the past few years, some of whom may have been forgotten.

One of them is Jake Woodford, a right-handed reliever, who threw the baseball at a decent level for parts of his career in St. Louis.

During the 2022 campaign, the best season of his big league career, the 28-year-old posted a 2.23 ERA in 48.1 innings.

Since then, unfortunately, things haven’t been too kind for him. He now owns a career 4.91 ERA after posting a 7.97 ERA with the Chicago White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates last season, and a 9.00 ERA with the Arizona Diamondbacks this season.

But his time with the Diamondbacks has been short-lived.

According to a recent report from the Arizona Republic, Woodford recently signed a deal with the Diamondbacks and made his debut with the team on July 2.

He’s allowed two earned runs in 2.0 innings, which is why his ERA sits at 9.00.

“DBacks to sign Jake Woodford,” Piecoro and Romero said. “The Diamondbacks are signing right-hander Jake Woodford to a major league deal, a source said, a move that helps shore up the club’s pitching depth after an avalanche of injuries in the big leagues and in Triple-A Reno. To make room for Woodford on the roster, the club will option right-hander Juan Morillo to Reno.”

Woodford will have plenty to figure out over the next few weeks to months if he wants to stay in the show.

It’s possible that the Diamondbacks could be using him now because of all the injuries they’ve faced to their entire roster.

It’s an unfortunate situation for Arizona, but one that Woodford can’t worry about too much.

He has another opportunity outside of St. Louis, and he needs to take advantage of it.
