  • Cubs’ Matthew Boyd elected to NL All-Star Game pitching staff for first time

Major League Baseball has announced the 2025 All-Star Game pitching staffs.

Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd has been named an All-Star for the first time in his career.

Boyd, 34, is having an excellent first campaign with the Cubs after dealing with injuries for the last four seasons.

The lefty is 8-3 with a 2.65 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP in 17 starts this season. Chicago took a flier on Boyd, who made only eight regular season starts in 2024 with the Cleveland Guardians.

He was great in those eight starts, going 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA. Boyd was phenomenal in the playoffs, pitching to a 0.77 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP in 11.2 innings.

The Cubs signed him to a two-year, $29 million contract with a mutual option for 2027.

Chicago had hoped Boyd could build on his strong return from Tommy John surgery and be a quality arm in the back end of the starting rotation.

Boyd has been that and more. Considering the Cubs lost Justin Steele for the season early and Shota Imanaga missed over a month of action, Boyd has kept Chicago at the top of the National League Central.

Now with Jameson Taillon on the injured list for the foreseeable future, the Cubs will have to rely on Boyd to throw the ball well even more.

Boyd will start the rubber match versus the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday Night Baseball.
