Former Pittsburgh Steelers and current Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens has caught some flak lately.
Recently, it was revealed that Pickens had pulled out of a youth football camp he was set to host on June 28 at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh.
According to TruEdge, the company Pickens was working with, he had agreed to do the camp before the trade to the Cowboys, and had confirmed he was still going to do it after the deal happened before cancelling last week.
After Pickens decided not to do the camp, TruEdge was able to bring in Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth to replace him, and was in the process of getting other Steelers players to join in. The camp has since been moved to July 20.
While that remains the case, TruEdge has since apologized for its initial statement, which it called “inappropriate” because “the language used in our original message mischaracterized George’s intent and actions.”
“Regrettably, the language used in our original message mischaracterized George’s intent and actions,” TruEdge explained. While our frustrations stemmed from the uncertainty surrounding the event, it was never our intention to publicly question George’s professionalism, integrity, or commitment to the community.
“We know understand that the tone and implications of our message were not only inappropriate but inconsistent with our values as an organization.”
While TruEdge could’ve used softer language in their initial statement, it doesn’t change the fact that Pickens let his young fans down.
Kudos to Freiermuth and whichever other Steelers attend for saving the day.
