Chelsea are not shy about signing players who are relegated from the Premier League, and the acquisition of Liam Delap is testament to that.

Despite being part of a relegated team, the Blues still hold Delap in high regard; otherwise, they would not have signed him.

By the looks of it, the same rule might apply to another player who was relegated to the Championship at the end of last season.

While Chelsea are desperately in need of an experienced centre-back this summer, they might end up signing an experienced full-back instead.

According to a report by CaughtOffside, the Blues are keeping an eye on Kyle Walker-Peters as they consider making a move for him.

The full-back has been on Chelsea’s radar in the past, but this time it is believed that Enzo Maresca might just make a move for him.

Why Chelsea need to be careful with the potential signing of Walker-Peters

Walker-Peters is a free agent after not renewing his contract at Southampton, who were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season.

The Saints finished bottom of the table, earning just 12 points throughout the entire campaign. It is no wonder that Walker-Peters does not want to stick around.

The potential arrival of Walker-Peters could pave the way for Malo Gusto to join Bayern Munich.

While the Southampton man would add some much-needed experience to the Chelsea backline, Enzo Maresca would need to find a way to play him without affecting the development of young Chelsea academy product Josh Acheampong.

If Maresca can find a way to do that, Walker-Peters could prove to be a shrewd signing for Chelsea.
