The Boston Celtics are in an offseason of change, and the changes could be much bigger than expected.
Over the past few weeks, the Celtics have been looking toward a summer that might completely change the outlook of the franchise. Of course, Boston doesn’t want to do any complete teardown only a year removed from winning a title, but with an unsavory cap situation and some aging veterans, it might not have a choice but to make some unpopular moves.
Among Boston’s potential unpopular moves is trading Jaylen Brown. In 2024, Brown won the Finals MVP and was arguably the team’s best player in the championship run.
While the conversation around a Brown trade has evolved over the past few years, he is set to make over $236 million in the next four years, including $53.1 million next season. With that kind of deal, Boston could send Brown out to secure some other pieces to continue competing for a championship when Jayson Tatum returns from his injury.
A potential trade could send Brown to the Sacramento Kings in a three-team deal mocked up by Rohan Raman of Hawks on SI. The deal sends Brown and Baylor Scheierman to Sacramento, Sam Hauser and Neemias Queta to Atlanta, and DeMar DeRozan, Keegan Murray and Jonas Valanciunas to Boston, along with two first-round picks from Sacramento and two seconds from Atlanta.

That type of deal could be a perfect middle ground for the Celtics to toe the line between all-in and cost-cutting. While the Celtics have plenty of options and potential suitors for Brown, this deal with Sacramento could give them exactly what they’re looking for.
